Bloomberg Jumps into the 2020 Race!
On November 24th, Michael Bloomberg announced his intentions to run for the 2020 Presidential Election. Most Americans know Michael Bloomberg as the Billionaire Former Mayor of New York City. By all accounts, he was a pretty successful mayor, especially in regards to reducing crime and homicides in the city. In 1990, with 2,245 homicides in the city, New York was the most dangerous city in the country. In 1994, Rudy Giuliani took over as NYC Mayor and implemented a “Stop and Frisk” policy of preventing crime. By the end of Giuliani’s term murders in the city had dropped to below 650. Michael Bloomberg took over in 2002 and dramatically increased the frequency of “stop and frisk” from 97,296 in 2002 to 685,724 in 2011. By 2013, murders in NYC were below 350. the “stop and frisk” policy (including some legitimate concerns a violation of civil liberties) and there are also other factors that likely played a role in the dramatic reduction of homicides in city, but even the remarkable turnaround in the nations largest city pales in comparison to the about-face of Bloomberg after leaving office in 2013.
Bloomberg, the Mayor that oversaw what might be the only gun control law that actually worked, has since apologized for “stop and frisk” and has been funding some of the largest gun control groups in the country. Groups like “Everytown forGun Safety” and “Mom’s Demand Action.” His groups support Universal Background checks, Red Flag Laws, and the banning of high capacity magazines and semi-automatic firearms. None of which will actually reduce criminal gun use the way “stop and frisk” did by taking illegal guns out of the hands of criminals in the streets. In addition, Bloomberg has also been funding gun control candidates in battleground states like Virginia and outspending even the NRA!
Bloomberg’s billions seemed to help, Doug Schoen opined in Forbes that Virginia Elections Prove Gun Safety is the Winning Issue for 2020. For the first time in a quarter-century, Democrats now control all branches of the VA State Government. With the wind at their backs, legislators are wasting no time proposing 2020 legislative changes. Many of the proposals coming out of Richmond have got rural Virginians up in arms, and there is a growing number of counties declaring themselves 2nd Amendment Sanctuaries.
The 2020 VA legislative session may be a preview of the 2020 Presidential Election. Michael Bloomberg spent millions to help gun control candidates get elected in VA this past November and now he has thrown his hat into the Presidential Election. He will likely spend much more in an attempt to win the White House and implement his gun control agenda on the rest of the country!
