Capital City Homicides Decline, but Jackson Remains One of the Most Dangerous Cities in America

According to WLBT there were 117 homicides in Jackson. While this is down from a record high of 160 in 2021, the per capita murder rate in the capital city is still one of the highest in the nation. If you compare Jackson, a city with a population of about 160,000, with Chicago and New York, the numbers are staggering. Chicago with a population of 2.6 million had 575 homicides in 2023 and New York City (NYC) with a population of 8.8 million only had 373 homicides. If Chicago and NYC had the same homicide rates, there would have been 1,901 homicides and 6,435 in NYC. The highest ever reported number of homicides in NYC was 2,245 in 1990.
