After Action Course Review: Active Shooter Armed Response (ASAR)
The Active Shooter Armed Response (ASAR) course at Boondocks Firearms Training Academy is an eight-hour, one-day program that combines classroom instruction with live-fire range training. The course is built around a clear objective: helping students understand the realities of an active shooter event, develop an effective response, and apply critical skills under pressure in a way that prioritizes stopping the threat quickly while minimizing harm to others.
The course is designed for concealed carriers, law enforcement, and church or school security personnel and places equal emphasis on knowledge and performance.
The ASAR course is designed to close the gap between basic handgun proficiency and real-world defensive application. Many shooters leave entry-level training with solid marksmanship skills but little ability to translate those skills into a dynamic, high-stress environment. This course is intended to move students beyond static shooting and into understanding how active shooter events unfold, how to think through a response, and how to act decisively when time is critical. Students are expected to process information, make rapid decisions, and execute actions under pressure. What Actually Occurs

Students are introduced to response considerations that aim to reduce victim count and improve decision-making. From there, the emphasis shifts to live-fire work. Drills are progressively designed to help students understand the limits of their marksmanship before beginning to apply those skills while moving and “off the square range”. Students begin to integrate movement, target identification, and decision-making.
The most significant portion of the course comes through scenario-based training. These scenarios place students in simulated situations where they must apply what they have learned while dealing with uncertainty and stress. Students quickly gain an honest understanding of their capabilities with a defensive handgun when the pressure is “real”.

This course functions as more than just training. It acts as a real-time evaluation of a student’s current skill set. Many participants discover a gap between their perceived level of preparedness and their actual performance. Skills that feel solid on a flat range often degrade when decision-making, time pressure, and stress are introduced. It does not require advanced prerequisites, extreme resource constraints (i.e. expensive holsters, high round count, or extensive travel cost) and still presents a meaningful challenge. All students who can safely operate a handgun are able to attend. The ASAR course represents a critical next step for anyone who has completed foundational handgun training and is beginning to ask whether they are truly prepared to respond to a real-world threat. It provides a structured environment where students can evaluate their abilities, identify weaknesses, and begin developing the skills needed for effective defensive response.
